The Guardians of the 1st Amendment Memorial is on scheduled to be dedicated on June 28, 2021.

Thanks in part to Vincent Moulden, Mitchelle Stephenson , Dee Goodwyn , Juanita Cage LewisDaryl Jones , City of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, State of Maryland, Caucus of African-American Leaders and the nonprofit Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee the Guardians of the 1st Amendment Memorial is on scheduled to be dedicated on June 28, 2021.

The memorial, which commemorates the journalists who were slain at the Capital newspaper on June 28, 2018, is the first of its kind in the State of Maryland. The memorial also will honor the First Amendment.


The $500, 000 memorial will be located in downtown Annapolis at Newman Park, less than two blocks from the Alex Haley-Kunta Kinte Memorial located on the City Dock.


On June 28, 2021, the 1st amendment memorial will be dedicated by Governor Larry Hogan, Anne Arundel County Steuart Pittman, Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley, Annapolis' First Lady Julie Williams Buckley and members of the community.


The June 28th event will take place at 11:00 a.m. and is open to the public.


The memorial is being spearheaded by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee, Inc, which which built the Civil Rights Foot Soldiers Memorial in Annapolis, the Coretta Scott King Memorial Garden in Edgewater and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Arnold, Maryland.
